New Singles Champ crowned in 2016

Perfect conditions were again on hand for our State week in South West Rocks. Mark and Nathan had the greens in pristine condition and we had some cracking games of bowls. This year we crowned new champions, as last year’s Pairs and Singles winners made an early exit.

The Pairs was first away with some upsets taking place, mainly last year’s winners Nick Hancott and Mick Woods getting beaten by Nathan Moore and Brett Long. However, they were halted in the next round by Dan Ryan and Jason Aurisch. The bottom quarter saw Ben Morthorpe and Brent Norman playing Mark Dagwell and Wade Turner, with this coming down to the last end and Ben and Brent winning 21-18, setting up a match against Dan and Jason.

The top half of the draw saw some convincing wins by first timers Chris Muddle and Tim Allen and Andrew Maclaren with Shannon White in the early games to also make for a great semi-final. Andrew and Shannon went on to win in a hard fought 20 -13. The other semi of Ben/Brent verse Dan/Jason saw Jason winning the last 3 ends to win 20-15.

The final was a no contest with Dan and Jason dominating and winning 20-4. Well done Dan and Jason on winning their first Pairs!

Singles

The Singles was well represented with 40 participants and more exciting games. Quarter finalists were Brent Norman v Bruce Armbuster, Steve Britt v Dan Ryan, Dave Croad v Tom Mulley, Jason Aurisch v Brett Long. Buster and Brent had a great tussle with Buster jumping out to lead by 19-9 early but Brent clawed his way back to 20 all and went on to win 25-22. Dan had another great tussle with a consistent Britty, but Dan converted well to win 25-20. Croady was dominant over Tommy Mulley 25-11 and Jason was in fine form against Longy, winning 25-15.

Semis saw Dan jumping out to an early lead against Brent, 21-13, but Brent again fought back to get to 26 all. With some great shots by both players, Brent ground out a 31-29 victory.

Dave was just brilliant against Jason, with Jason throwing everything at Dave he was replying with some outstanding draw bowls and went on to win 31-21.

This set up a final with a new champ to be named, as neither Dave nor Brent have won the coveted NSW Greenkeepers Singles. And what a game it was, with Dave again showing the consistent drawing he has showed all week jumping out to an early 19-9 lead but as shown in earlier matches Brent showed his fighting qualities to get back to 20-21. Croady then played some great draw shots to score 10 shots to 1 and go on to win the game 31-21.

Well done Dave on winning his first NSW Greenkeepers title!

Again thanks must go out to staff at South West Rocks Country Club for their hospitality over the past two years and also the support from our fellow greenies over this time as well. Don’t forget to pencil in next year’s Federation Week in Melbourne from April 30 2017. The 6 Way was held at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on Tuesday 19th -Thursday -21st July.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the annual Greenkeepers v Legends game at Bar Beach Bowling Club on Monday 25th July. If you haven’t got your name in, give me a call.

The NSWBGA State Championships 2015 have been decided!

4 – 8 May 2015, South West Rocks Country Club

The Pairs saw some great early match ups with most of the favourites getting through to the quarter finals. Luke Wade and Adam Troth defeated Terry Doyle and Mick Bottles 22-13 and Shannon White and Brent Norman defeated Garry Witte and Tom Mulley 19-10. Daniel Ryan and Jason Aurisch got three on the last end to defeat Simon Cooper and Peter Watts 16-15, while Nick Hancott and Mick Woods needed an extra end to defeat Ray Cooper and Martin Gosper 19-18. Semi-finals were two very competitive games with Hancott and Woods defeating Wade and Troth 24-14 with White and Norman falling over the line 22-20 against Ryan and Aurisch.

The final was an attacking game, with both teams dropping some big numbers throughout the game, but a man of the match performance from Nick Hancott helped him and Mick ‘Woodsy’ claim their maiden title 25-22 over Shannon White and Brent Norman.
The Singles also saw some great games and making it through to the semi-finals, where Daniel Ryan was up against Jason Aurisch, with Jason wearing Dan down after being 13 all early to win 31-22. The other semi-final of Shannon White and Adam Troth saw them trade blows throughout the evening with Shannon sneaking over the line 31-30. The final also was a great game which saw 39 ends of bowls. But after losing the pairs final, Shannon White was determined not to make it two losses and converted some good heads to beat Jason Aurisch 31-22.

Congratulations to all the players involved for making it a great week. Thanks also goes to the team from South West Rocks Country Club for their hospitality. Look forward to seeing everyone next year and hopefully a few more new faces as well.
